“That was my last round,” said Shaw, slinging the rifle over his shoulder and taking out his Browning Thirteen.

Barnes, continued to take aim and fire. The progress of the RAMs was slow, but relentless. For the time being, no creature had managed to get within twenty feet of Emma, Shaw, Barnes or Beth, but all of them knew, that when the bullets ran out, it would be hand to hand combat, and it was only a matter of time before they were overrun.

The bodies of the RAMs kept falling, dyeing the snow around them pink and red. Often the beasts fell flat, becoming invisible to their assassins as they were entombed in whiteness until the thaw. Creature after creature was stopped in mid-stride by a seventeen hundred mile per hour missile to the head.

“Fuck!” shouted Barnes over the sound of the pistol shots to his left and right. “That’s me out,” he said slinging his rifle and pulling out his Glock Seventeen.

“I’m out too,” shouted Beth, throwing her Glock Seventeen into the snow in front of her and pulling a large knife and a hatchet from her shoulder bag. She stood there for a moment like a statue, with a look of pure hatred on her face. She watched as the hellish beasts continued their advance. This was the end. She always knew her life in this new world would not last for long, but at least she had experienced a little happiness since Leeds. She had fought for everything alongside, Mike, Lucy and the three people she was with now; she had fought for right over wrong, for justice over crime, for everything, for every inch of ground they gained over in Safe Haven, and she was determined to die the same way she had lived...fighting. She took the bag from her shoulder and carefully placed it down on the ground.

The other three kept taking careful aim with their handguns, determined to wipe out as many of the creatures as they could. Then, suddenly they all stopped as they caught movement from the edge of their fields of vision. Beth began to charge. She retraced their snowy tracks, bringing her knees up higher where the snow was deeper.

“Beth! Nooo!” shouted Barnes.

“Arrrggghhh!” she screamed at the top of her voice, diving onto the first RAM, making it lose balance and fly backwards. She brought her hatchet up and hammered it down with a single killing blow, straight through the forehead of the creature. Its grey eyes rolled back, making the eerie pupils disappear behind pallid lids. She pulled the gory blade free and pounced on the next approaching RAM as the sound of guns began to echo once more.

“Beth!” Barnes shouted again, between shots. He began to walk forward maintaining his composure as well as he could and continuing to take down the creatures with precision. “Beth!” His voice was pleading, but each time he shouted the only response was a maniacal scream as his lover unleashed blow after blow on victim after victim.
